What is Solarpunk?

Solarpunk is an artistic movement that invites us to imagine and act out models of utopia.

It begins with imagination. Where mainstream media floods visions of the future with the pending doom of dystopia resulting from our sinful human nature and the existential havoc caused by imperial capitalism, Solarpunk dares us to create radically alternative narratives. Solarpunk inspires us to illuminate self-fulfilling myths of ecological harmony, free association, and solidarity economies.

But Solarpunk pushes us further than mere expression and idealistic rhetoric. The self-fulfilling myths become experimental blueprints, as Solarpunk encourages us to transform stories into action. Life becomes a game of “what part of our utopia can we enact right now?” And as this game gets more players, it scales up from the bottom in its sophistication.

The ultimate result, Solarpunk aspires, would be living in a utopia. From imagining it, to acting it out, and succeeding by avoiding to act out systems of top-down hierarchical oppression.

While cyberpunk deals with themes of totalitarianism, hyper-consumerism and the futility of resisting the system, Solarpunk ushers in a restorative vision about the endless possibilities of hierarchy-free utopian life where humans and technology exist in complementary balance with nature.

Join us at Solidaria as we explore and experiment with Solarpunk.
