Foxconn is Apple’s largest manufacturing partner, and many of the Apple products we use daily are born from Foxconn workers’ labor. Yu Tian, originally from a rural village in Hubei Province, left home at 17 to work at Foxconn in Shenzhen. On March 17, 2010, she jumped from a fourth-floor dormitory of Foxconn in Longhua. In the same year, 14 other employees at Foxconn attempted suicide as well.
Though Yu survived, she was left permanently paralyzed. Foxconn pressured her family to sign a medical fee prepayment application, claiming they would reserve the right to reclaim funds later. Yu eventually received a meager compensation of about 100K Yuan (about 106K Krona) under public pressure. This amount was even insufficient for her early medical expenses.
Despite gaining public attention, Yu still lives in poverty. She works hard in hopes of living a dignified life.The documentary “Fly to Ascension”, centered on Yu‘s story, will be screened in Stockholm. Following the screening, there will be a discussion session with a guest speaker who is knowledgeable about the working conditions of Chinese laborers. This event aims to shed light on the life and challenges of female workers while raising funds for Tian Yu’s family to support their medical expenses and daily needs.
